Go Fly a Trike

Go Fly a Trike Go Fly a Trike Go Fly a TrikeA propeller whips at the back of a weight shift vehicle. You take off and it could seem youre almost on a hang glider, the pilot holding onto a bar, which hes been pushing to control the wings. You look around through what is usually an open cockpit, however, and there are no windows keeping you from nature, from feeling like a bird. Some call them ultralights, others trikes, depending on weight and passengers. But most who watched Fly Away Home with Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin just saw how exciting this type of flying can be. Abid Farooqui, who had been co-owner of Evolution Trikes for years and has since started SilverLight Aviation, says his full-time crew, which includes two mechanical engineers, believes the challenges to designing are still there. First, there seems to be confusion on what ultralight aircraft and trikes are, he says. They are basically the same. But ultralight aircraft cant be more than 254 pounds, flies to a lesser s peed, and has a single occupant. Ultralight also cant have more than five gallons of gas.The Apollo Delta Jet 2. Image SilverLight AviationAccording to www.sportaviationcenter.com, trikes have an advantage over airplanes because they lack a tail. They are not burdened by the weight, drag, and down-force associated with the tail structure, the site says. This gives trikes better climb rates and the ability to carry greater loads. The wing is a semi-flex wing and has no control surfaces, Farooqui says. Its all happening by shifting weight or by running motion of the whole surface of wing. Then theres the carriage- thats what the wing is attached to. The whole carriage assembly has a vertical tube going from bottom to top, usually behind the cockpit, and meets up with the wing. You also have the mats and the trikes are triangulated. The cockpit is located near the mast.Trikes also allow for a lot of profil innovation, with wings commonly customized. I remember choosing to go with an It alian wing, then tweaking it, he says. We had no idea of the result but thats part of the fun. I found that change took us up to 80-85 mph cruising and went cross country from Florida to Oshkosh and back. That was 25 mph better than anything we created before. Going over mountains, I had never seen anything like that in an open aircraft. He ended up working on ones that were even faster. Evolutions Revo has 80 hp, a gross weight of 1,040 pounds, and a maximum straight and level speed for the competition wing of 110 mph. Because there are fewer requirements than some aircraft, he finds it a dream come true to design with his crew. When I was a kid growing up in Pakistan, I never imagined that Id be flying everywhere in any vehicles like this, says Farooqui, who has a degree in microelectronics from the Rochester School of Technology and in computer engineering from the University of South Florida. Then I saw a book with pictures of airplanes and knew its what I wanted to do. The trike came out of that. Its a whole different kind of view. And its still exciting.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionWhen I was a kid growing up in Pakistan, I never imagined that Id be flying everywhere in any vehicles like this.Abid Farooqui, SilverLight Aviation

It is true that you have no industry or work experience in this new dream job, today. Butjust like the career you now wish to leave, it takes time and commitment to learnnew skills. After all, you are coming into this new industry with no experience, competing against those who spent their careers in it.Knowing you have work to do is just the beginningUnfortunately, many people are conditioned to believe that because they do leid know something now they will never be able to learn it. With the changing times and technology in todays job market, it has become important for people to keep learning new skills, regardless of age or experience level. You may not be competitive today. But you are certainly on your way.Take a full inventory of everything you know how to doSkills never go to waste. Usually, people just fall out of practice and need to refresh their memory. Before thinking everything in your old career was a waste of time, take a full inventory of everything you know how to do. Here are some examples of how to take inventory using these steps and questions below1. What technology do I use every day for both work and entertainmentWe all use devices for something in this day and age. And such devices are used for work, too. Go through what you know how to do.2. Take inventory of things that others have said about you in the pastWhat do my supervisors, friends, and co-workers say about my personality? Why do they enjoy working with me?3. Take inventory of achievements in your previous careerHow did I succeed in my previous career? What licenses, degrees, and certifications have I worked towards? How have I contributed to companies in the past? All of the above may turn out to be a very long list. For example, if you were once a lawyer and now wish to apply for an executive job, your intuition and presentation skills will serve you in both positions. There are always common threads between indus tries that serve a person. For example, a Military versicherungsschein Officer who leaves the US Army and becomes a high school principal, or an Executive VP at an investment firm who decides to become a CPA. Many skills you have may need tweaking, but they just might be transferable.Never dismiss those unspoken skills. Just because they do not directly apply for the job at hand, does not make them useless. These are things like personality traits and interpersonal or entertainment and athletic skills. These are the types of skills that may serve a person when least expected. When you are missing key skillsFocus on plugging up all the holes in your resume. Theres a big difference between, I dont have a degree in the desired field vs. It says Advanced Mathematics Degree required. If you know you need an advanced degree, this will be more time to invest in your career change. When you have plugged up holes in your resume for the dream job you want, you will find applying to jobs in a ne w field to be like starting over. You may take some ground-floor positions, but it will certainly be worth it.You may even find yourself many steps ahead of those who in your dream career who claim to have experience. An Inside Look at How Were Changing Uber

An Inside Look at How Were Changing Uber Below is an article originally written by Liane Hornsey, the SVP seismic retrofitting is not. I want you to know that Uber is doing the hard and necessary and often invisible work to transform urselves from the inside out. The fact that employees keep asking the question is a good sign. Rather than being too focused on the superficial, I believe they are anxious for us to tell our story because they can feel the change. As I said in my last blog, my goal is to make Uber the most inclusive company on the planet where all employees feel safe, supported and empowered to be successful. The past year has been an incredible journey and weve made meaningful progress with the introduction of our cultural norms revamping our end-to-end hiring practices and performance management process implementing and retaining pay equity in the aggregate between women and men and between all racial groups and other initiatives weve undertaken as a result of deeply l istening to our employees needs and figuring out how to be more responsive, transparent, inclusive and caring in everything we do.In our internal policies, for example, we put a lot of effort into adding and improving benefits that support families. We established global standards for parental leave to support both women and men in taking healthy time off to welcome a new child, and introduced new policies for telecommuting and part-time work to accommodate more flexible ways of working. We hosted Take Your Children to Work Day a few weeks ago and I was delighted to see many more employees participating and showing off their workplace to their toddlers. It was a really joyful day. My hope is that we are becoming an employer of choice because of what we have learned and continue to learn by listening, and how we are responding with big, bold moves in the right direction. We are starting to see some encouraging results in our workforce representation, although we still have more to do. In April we shared our 2018 Diversity Report that showed modest progress on the proportion of women in the workforce (+1.9%), women in tech (+2.5%), and women in tech leadership (+4.3%) compared to 2017. We also saw gains in the proportion of underrepresented groups in leadership (+2.5%) and in tech (+3.1%). For the first time, we gave employees the option to voluntarily self-identify as LGBTQ so that we could get a more accurate and inclusive snapshot of our employee base. And weve brought in a new chief diversity survivors will be able to settle their claims without a confidentiality provision and we will publish a safety transparency report and help develop an open-source, standard taxonomy for classifying incidents so that overall reporting is more accurate. These changes may seem symbolic or abstract, but I want to emphasize how truly meaningful they are. Combined with the new safety features we rolled out a month ago, Uber is stepping out in front to play a bigger role in ens uring that all of our constituents can have a safe experience, and in the unfortunate event that they dont, they are able to seek redress in a way that is fair and transparent and respects their dignity.Im proud that weve come so far and were taking action in a way that isnt just skin deep but is lasting and profound. It may not be something you can easily see, but I certainly hope that as a rider, driver, eater, courier, employee or member of our community, you will feelour commitment to change.Thank you and lets move forward together.Liane

If youre left-handed, this is the day you will be most productive

If youre left-handed, this is the day you will be most productiveIf youre left-handed, this is the day you will be most productiveSouthpaws make up about 10% of the general population. Most of us are aware of the supposed psychological differencesbetween righties and lefties, like left-handed people using theright parte of theirbrain more frequently, which is the part responsible forcreative and verbal functions, but a new survey conducted bySimpleTexting offers some comparatively underreported contrasts. In their review of 750 professionals, half of which were right-handed, the other half left, the authors found left-handers consistently spent more time on social media at work. Did you know that left-handed males tend to drink more coffee than right-handed ones? Or that left-handed women are particularly productive on Fridays?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBelow Ladders dissect s the most interesting productivity and behavioral habits determined by which hand you hold a pencil with. The right ideaThis new survey cosigns a wealth of independent research that suggests the small population of left-handers are indeed the more creative, irrespective of gender. Forty-two percent of right-handed women described themselves to be creatively minded, compared to 51% of left-handed women. This polarity was much less dramatic among men, though it was still noted. Forty-six percent of right-handed men described themselves as creative, which is just 1% less than the left-handed men that described themselves this way. Right-handed individuals primarily perceived themselves to be more analytical.A report published in The Creative Research Journal seems to think the creative edge that accompanies southpaws stems from having to adjust to a world that better accommodates right-handed people. Back in 2013, a gruppe of psychiatrists from the University of Athens pitted a sample o fleft-handed and right-handed undergraduates against each other via two cognitive ability tests. Lefties, which more often utilizethe right side of their brain outperformedrighties on both tests. The authors of the study wrote, The findings are considered to support the view that greater engagement of right-hemispheric resources facilitates the performance of higher-order functions that orchestrate cognition, such as mental flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory operations. No beans leftLeft-handed men drink the most coffee by quite a significant margin. Sixteen percent have at least five cups a day, and 6% reported an average of six cups. Maybe this contributes to stats regarding overactivity. On balance, left-handers use social media a lot more at work than right-handers do. Most right-handers use social media for a max of 15 minutes per eight hour day, while left-handers tend to browse between 16 and 30 minutes on the clock.Interestingly enough, left-handers and right -handers, go to bed around the same time (between 10 pm and 11 pm), although righties tend to wake up a little earlier (between 5 am and 6 am vs. 6 am to 7 am).The distinctions only get weirder from there. For whatever reason, a sizeable portion of right-handed women felt that they were the least productive on Mondays, whereas right-handed men felt the least productive on Tuesdays. Neither hand persuasion was affected by Wednesday, though left-handed women and men got the most done on Fridays. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

What Its Like to Work in a Long-Term Care Pharmacy Steve Dove has worked as a pharmacist in a long-term care pharmacy, for Rexall Long-Term Care for three years and long-term care in general for eight years. His company fulfills the pharmacy needs for around 25 long-term care facilities, which range from four up to 300 beds, all in Victoria, on Vancouver Island, B.C. This means a total of around 1,200 patients and more than 1,000 prescriptions per week. Dove works alongside seven other pharmacists. Five of the other seven are either clinical pharmacists or prescription pharmacists Three people check prescriptions after theyve be en processed- one person checks new orders, and twopeople manage refills. Two people input prescriptions into the computerTwo are what Dove describes as spares, who cover for anyone whos not there and work where theyre needed. How It Differs From a Traditional Pharmacy Working in a long-term care pharmacy setting is different from a traditional pharmacy because there are no patients coming in and out. The advantage to it is you can control your workflow much better because you dont have any customers coming in, explains Dove. Your main contact is doctors and nurses, and we also know everything the patient is taking. In a traditional pharmacy setting, it can be very difficult to know if patients are taking other prescribed drugs or over the counter medications which can interact with the medication prescriptions that you are filling. There can be some negatives to working in a long-term care setting, such as Theres much less human interaction, which some people can miss. You know ve ry little about your patients because you never see them.It can seem like a bit of a factory.Long-term care pharmacy is more clinical than retail. Typical Long Term Care Pharmacist Job Description The role of a long-term care pharmacist is broad and varied. Pharmacists may be expected to Prepare medications by reviewing and interpreting physician ordersDetect therapeutic incompatibilities and possible interactions between drugsDispense medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticalsControl medications by monitoring drug therapies and advising interventionsComplete pharmacy operational requirements, such asOrganizing and directing technicians workflowVerifying technician preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticalsVerifying order entries, charges, and inspections Answer questions and requests made by health care professionalsOccasional counseling of patients on drug therapiesComply with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, Th e Drug Enforcement Administration, and The Food and Drug Administration including but not limited toMonitor nursing unit inspectionsMaintain records for controlled substancesRemove outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventorySupervise the work results of support personnelMaintain current registrationStudy existing and new legislation, anticipating legislationAdvise management on needed actions. How To Use LinkedIn To Get Hired In 60 Days

How To Use LinkedIn To Get Hired In 60 Days How To Use LinkedIn To Get Hired In 60 Days LinkedIn is the new black. 87% of recruiters use LinkedIn to check candidates. So if you’re not present on the platform, or your presence falls flat, you’re doing yourself a grave disservice. Let’s talk about how to maximize LinkedIn so you can get hired for the job you really want. There are only 3 simple steps. Get Found The right keywords are essential, and they will make or break the performance of your LinkedIn profile. First, let’s dispense with the wrong keywords â€" I call these imposter key words: dynamic, motivated, problem solver, team player, good communication skills, and more. But wait…aren’t all those words in the online ads? Yes, they are. However, not a blessed 1 of these imposter key words has anything to do with what the recruiter is going to type in when she’s searching for someone like you. Use this litmus test to separate the real key words from the imposters. Look at an ad, read it, go over it, and ask yourself what would the employer be paying me to do every 2 weeks? For example, an ad for a sales manager will say, “Manage high-performance sales team, Generate leads with consistency and determination, drive revenue from new and existing accounts, and Provide exceptional service to clients.” Those phrases are what they’re paying you to do. The ads will always say “high motivation” and “good communication skills,” but they’re not giving you a paycheck every 2 weeks to pay for your “good communication skills.” What they’re paying you for is your expertise, which in this case, would be Sales Management, Lead Generation, Revenue Growth, and Client Services. Including these words will be essential to having the recruiters and decision makers find you on LinkedIn. Get Read Once you know what your real keywords are, use them throughout your LinkedIn profile, starting with the headline. Too often, candidates allow LinkedIn to fill in as a default headline your current job title and employer. Don’t do that. It’s unimaginative and boring. Transform the auto-filled job title headline into a SkyLine Headline. The SkyLine Headline is comprised of your job title (or future job title) and your expertise. Use the 120 characters LinkedIn gives you to provide the recruiter or decision maker with a glimpse of all 360 degrees of your skills. For example: “Sr Software Product Manager ? Expertise: Product Development, Introduction & Launch | Customer Engagement & Insights” Get Connected A big network is fine. The right network is better. When you’re in active job search mode, the right people to connect to are the recruiters and decision makers. What industry or industries are you interested in? Reach out to recruiters in those sectors. Where do you want to work? Build a list of your top 10 companies, and initiate connection requests with the relevant people in those organizations. There's an art and a science to this, so you can make sure that what you say is not a commoditized email in which you and all your competitors are saying the same thing. The Signs, Symptoms, and Cures of an Afternoon Slump

The Signs, Symptoms, and Cures of an Afternoon Slump The Signs, Symptoms, and Cures of an Afternoon Slump Afternoon Slump is a term used to describe the sleepy, tired, and sluggish feeling that comes on in the afternoon, usually between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.  There are many different reasons people experience afternoon slump, but the symptoms are generally the same or very similar. Understanding what causes your run-down feeling in the  afternoon is important to  figure out how to address it. Its also important to know what quick-fix cures will alleviate the run-down feeling. The Symptoms of an Afternoon Slump Frequent yawning and/or feeling sleepyExtreme fatigue or lethargySlight changes in visionTingling or feeling of muscle weaknessMoodiness (i.e., becoming irritable, short-tempered, or depressed without provocation)Falling asleep at your deskCraving carbohydratesA headache or stomach ache A serious afternoon slump is more than just feeling like the day is getting long and a nap would be nice. It is marked with a profound sense of tiredness or fatigue that makes it hard to focus and may be accompanied by an intense need to sleep. Causes There are four main causes of an afternoon slump: An underlying metabolic disorder such as  pre-diabetes or insulin resistance,  reactive hypoglycemia, and  polycystic ovarian syndromeGetting too little sleep on a regular basisPoor eating habits such as eating too many carbohydratesHigh levels of stress Cures If you dont have a metabolic disorder, here are some simple ways to get over the afternoon slump hump: Sit in the Sun for 10 minutes: You can reset your internal clock, reduce the amount of melatonin your body produces, and boost your vitamin D.Consume Protein Rather than Carbs: Try tuna salad but skip the bread; sliced chicken instead of pasta, and a salad with an egg. Cutting out the carbs can make a difference in feeling an afternoon crash come on.  Rub Some Peppermint Oil on your Hands: Rub your hands together and then pat your face. The scent of peppermint is a known to increase energy.Eat a Square of Dark Chocolate: Dark chocolate is very healthy, unlike milk chocolate, with high levels of healthy fat and antioxidants it contains. It also provides a touch of caffeine to give you a boost. Chew Gum: Chewing gums with strong minty flavors like peppermint and spearmint are stimulating, and the act of chewing helps the brain fight feelings of lethargy.Do Isometric Exercises: By tensing a muscle and holding it, you encourage blood flow. Try tensing your biceps, holding for 5 to 10 seconds, and then releasing. You can do the same with your calves, thighs, chest, stomach, and glutes.Put a Rosemary Plant in your Office: The scent of rosemary is known to be energizing. Whenever you need a pick me up, rub a sprig between your fingers to release the fragrance. You can also rub one on your hands, neck, and face. Have a Healthy Snack: Munch on something that combines protein, fiber, and complex carbohydrates (such as whole-grain crackers or raw vegetables) to raise your blood sugar levels and keep them up.Add a Bit of Variety to your Day: Concentration declines after about an hour, and it only gets worse from there. Without a break, the tedium of a task will be mind-numbing by the time you’re 90 minutes in, and you’ll lose your productivity. When you feel your focus fading, switch to something else for 30 minutes. Stay Active: Even short bursts of activity can keep you alert and boost your fitness. If youre in an office, instead of emailing or calling colleagues, get up and walk to a colleagues desk to ask a question face to face. If youre home, visit a next-door neighbor (even if its to borrow a cup of sugar). The change of scenery alone will be a pick-me-up.Play a Tune: If you like music, insert your earbuds or put on your headset and jam out to one of your favorite high-energy songs. It will instantly invigorate you and make you feel pumped. Be Social: Organize your time, so you engage with others during those peek slump times when your concentration and energy are waning. We are social animals, and interactions always rev us up. But make sure it’s an interesting, interactive activity. Sitting in a room listening to someone else drone on and on will just send you snoozing.Brush your Teeth: Or try mouthwash. Doing something that activates your senses can wake you upEngage in Mindful Meditation: There are all kinds of mediation (TM, or transcendental meditation, being the most popular one). Meditation requires no more than 15 to 20 minutes of sitting quietly and focusing on yourself and your breathing. Meditation will not only declutter your mind but leave you energized.     Try Some Yoga: If youre not the high-energy type, then try chilling out with some stress-free yoga positions. Yoga not only alleviates the damage done to your body by sitting in a chair for too long but will significantly boost your energy level.

More Than Half of Americans Did Not Get a Raise This Year

More Than Half of Americans Did Not Get a Raise This Year More Than Half of Americans Did Not Get a Raise This Year Even though unemployment sits near historic lows, many workers have not seen any benefit from the strong job market. In fact, more than half of all American workers (52 percent) did not get a raise over the past 12 months, according to a new survey from   Bankrate . And the numbers are actually worse than they look because in reality, only 38 percent of workers saw their pay increase at their current job. Another 18 percent, which includes eight percent of those surveyed who also got a raise from their previous employer, saw their wages go up when they got a new job. For older workers, the numbers are even worse. Nearly two-thirds of those aged 53 and up did not get a raise at their current job or get a new job that pays better over the past 12 months. That compares to a 47 percent rate among workers younger than 53. Employers are being cautious, and so are employees. Even though the unemployment rate has been low and the number of available jobs hit six million in August according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), workers are reluctant to move on from their current position. That job openings number is only slightly down from July, which set a record for the data tracked by the BLS since 2000. But, despite all the demand, the “quits” rate, which measures the percentage of people who voluntarily left their jobs in a month, was only 2.1 percent in August. That’s virtually unchanged over the past two years, according to data analysis done by Jon Talton at the   Seattle Times . If employees won’t quit their jobs when they don’t get raises (or at least be willing to), it removes the incentive for companies to pay workers more. But workers may not hold the lack of a raise against their company for the same reason they aren’t willing to leave their job, despite the market being healthy - they’re nervous about the economy’s ongoing prospects. Those concerns may not be valid, but the   Great Recession  happened recently enough (December 2007 through January 2009, though those dates are debatable) that people remember it. That may have left a lingering hangover that keeps some people - in fact, quite a lot of them - from pushing for a raise and being willing to leave when they don’t get one. Among the American workers who did get a pay raise from their current employer, a growing number got one by getting a promotion and new responsibilities. That number grew to 24 percent of those getting raises, up from 10 percent last year. About a quarter of raises (27 percent) came through cost-of-living increases, while performance-based raises were the top reason (52 percent) workers saw their pay rise. Another eight percent cited a different reason, and four percent did not know why their pay was increased, according to Bankrate, which noted the likelihood of getting a raise from your current employer rises steadily with income and education level. “While the economy continues to improve, it’s disappointing that Americans’ wages have not,” said Bankrate.com Chief Financial Analyst Greg McBride. “Though younger workers are experiencing career advancement, older Americans are hampered by stagnant incomes. This makes it even more vital to start saving early , since significant wage gains become less frequent as you get older.” There are a number of fields where wages   have risen , but that has not emboldened workers in less in-demand jobs to push for more money. What’s clear is that in many cases companies are not offering raises and employees are not asking for them. If you want a raise, it makes sense to test your marketability. If you get another offer for more money, you can either take it or use it as leverage. Some employers may not respond well to that, but others will fight to retain valuable employees. Take the lead in your own employment situation. Ask for a raise, and if the request is denied, ask for parameters to earn one over a reasonable period of time (three to six months). If your employer won’t negotiate, it may be time to test the job market.

This is the tool to narrow the gap in the equation of career happiness

This is the tool to narrow the gap in the equation of career happiness This is the tool to narrow the gap in the equation of career happiness Throughout my years as an executive coach I have seen people triumph over immense hardship while others falter over minutiae. I’ve seen a sense of urgency spearhead achievement while chronic victimization hamstring progress. I’ve been party to personal transformations because people risk vulnerability with great courage and I’ve seen stagnation be the end-product of complaining about unmet expectations. Most often the underachievers carry self-doubt that they don’t know how to convert to confidence. It’s pretty clear to me what makes people happy and empowered to create the life they want and what does not. It’s a simple equation. The golden rule of happinessThe shorter the distance between what you want and where you are the happier you will be and the more risks you will take. You want a better jobLet’s say you want to move up in your career, possibly changing companies. And right now you are in a miserable role. There is an undeniably huge gap between what you want and where you are. I liken it to a child who is learning to crawl and sees an animated toy that he really wantsm across the room. He rocks back and forth, trying to propel himself toward the prize. He inches forward on his knees but can‘t quite get his hands to synchronize. And he comes to a moment of truth. Can he get the toy or should he give up? Will he risk with determination to challenge his body, or will he pacify himself with something closer, giving up the goal. The tool to get thereOne of the reasons I enjoy being an executive coach is because people who seek one are not only determined to create the life they want but have the courage to admit they can’t see what is holding them back. They get curious about themselves the same way a little boy gets curious about how to reach what intrigues him. He doesn’t know what to fear because he hasn’t experienced failure. If he touches a hot stone he likely won’t touch it again. For adults this takes great risk because we have e xperienced many hot stoves in our lives. The key is to allow a difficult experience to be a situation, not an edict. It takes mindful vulnerability to view a situation from a third-party perspective and not internalize it as personal. Curiosity is the tool that builds vulnerability. Adopt the innocence of a child and the world will be much larger than you think it is.Narrowing the gapLet’s revisit the fact that you want a better job with curiosity. No more blindly applying for positions or ruminating that nothing works. Ask yourself, “WHAT does ‘better’ actually mean? More flexibility? Less travel? A culture that shares your values? The ability to broaden your skillset or mentor under a high performer? WHAT does your ideal work day actually look like?WHEN will you compile a formal list of companies you want to work for so you can target your resume toward their mission, goals and the job description? WHEN will you update your resume with measurable key accomplishments instead of simply a list of your current responsibilities? WHEN will you call former bosses and colleagues and ask them to write a letter of reference for you, giving them bullets from your list of key accomplishments to make it easy for them?Get curious about WHO might help you answer the previous questions. Who inside your organization will you meet with monthly to discuss your career? WHO will you call or reach out to on social media networks to ask about the culture of their organization? When you get curious about the details of your goals it provides you with actionable strategies that narrow the gap between what you want and where you are. You embrace the unknown with the curiosity of a child. This acceptance of your own vulnerability allows you to set aside the expectation of being perfect and builds the confidence necessary to risk. It also provides clarity and context around what your ideal life will truly be like as opposed to theorizing it. You step into the life you create.Mary  Lee  Gannon, ACC, CAE  is an executive coach and corporate CEO who helps busy leaders get off the treadmill to nowhere to be more effective, earn more, be  more calm and enjoy  connected relationships with the people who matter while it still matters.  Watch her FREE Master Class training on Three Things to Transform Your Life and Career Right Now at  www.MaryLeeGannon.com.

Girding for battle on health reform

Girding for battle on health reform Girding for battle on health reform Several weeks ago, we discussed the new health care reform law and some of the constitutional challenges that critics have raised. According to an article in The New York Times today, the case that could carry the most weight is the lawsuit filed in the Northern District of Florida by the attorneys general of 13 states. The litigations venue is one element on the scale. The plaintiffs apparently chose Pensacola in order to put the case in the path of the conservative 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals while bypassing a Tallahassee judge who was named by President Bill Clinton. But the greater threat to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act rests on the plaintiffs legal arguments, the most potent of which is that the Commerce Clause does not give Congress the power to mandate that all Americans either obtain health insurance coverage or pay a tax penalty. As the Times observes:Some legal scholars, including some who normally lean to the left, believe the states have identifie d the laws weak spot and devised a credible theory for eviscerating it. The power of their argument lies in questioning whether Congress can regulate inactivity in this case by levying a tax penalty on those who do not obtain health insurance. If so, they ask, what would theoretically prevent the government from mandating all manner of acts in the national interest, say regular exercise or buying an American car? Other experts, however, dismiss the Florida lawsuit as a politically motivated lark at taxpayer expense, and argue that the insurance mandate falls comfortably within Supreme Court precedents. The states, they say, may not even withstand a challenge to their standing to bring the suit, since they are only indirectly affected by the mandate. The Justice Department is expected to move for dismissal of the complaint by the middle of June, and oral arguments have already been scheduled for September 14. Whatever the outcome, chances are the decision will be appealed to the 11t h Circuit, from which the next step would be the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the issue may make its way into this summers Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan. As reported in the Huffington Post and the Swampland blog, among the questions the Republican National Committee plans to ask during the hearings is Where Does Kagan Stand As Health Care Overhaul Faces Variety Of Legal Challenges?posted by vera

4 essential questions to ask before launching your dream

4 essential questions to ask before launching your dream 4 essential questions to ask before launching your dream Every dream has to begin somewhere, and it’s often in the unlikeliest of places. If you’re on the road to living out your biggest goals and dreams, you’ll soon find that it rarely takes a linear path. Everyone’s journey is different, and even when we have a solid plan, we often find ourselves doing work or trying things we never would have imagined.Part of this is the simple reality that we have no control over external circumstances. When we’re just starting out, or even in the middle of our journey, we have the ability to influence outside factors, but we only truly control our attitude and our effort. We have the ability to always embrace positivity, to believe in ourselves and to hope that things will work out in our favor. We have the ability to work hard and to keep going in the face of adversity, failure and mistakes. Never compromise that which you can control. Always use it to your advantage. But know this - despite your best intentions and best plans, you may find yourself on a course that doesn’t seem to make sense at the proverbial 10-foot level. It takes time, experience and an ability to see things from a much higher-level that helps put things in perspective. It takes feedback, honest, truthful feedback, from people who care about you to help you make better sense of things. And what you do with that feedback will help determine your destiny. It’s the questions you ask yourself that define success and help build your foundation for what comes next.In my work with CEOs and senior executives, I’ve found one common thread - successful people and high-achievers always take the time to ask themselves the philosophical questions. They don’t just get on the treadmill and run away without ever stopping to ask, “Why am I doing what I’m doing?” They’re always self-evaluating. Not driving themselves crazy. But always questioning their approach and wondering what they could do to make incremental, even minor, improvements.1. What wi ll make me most happy?Isn’t this always the most important question? Then why do so few people ask it of themselves? Maybe they don’t know to simply look around them. Take this remarkable research from Harvard University professor, Daniel Gilbert:“People believe that the best way to predict how happy they will be in the future is to know what their future holds, but what they should really want to know is how happy those who’ve been to the future actually turned out to be.”So much of what enables us to understand what will make us happy comes from empirical observation and the stories of others. We may be drawn to certain things through our intuition and curiosity, but we also want to know what others experienced on their journey and how it made them feel. Here’s further context from the Harvard Gazette:Previous research in psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics has shown that people have difficulty predicting what they will like and how much they will like i t, which leads them to make a wide variety of poor decisions.Take the time to ask yourself this question. What makes you happy? What makes the people happy that you admire and respect? Find yourself a good baseline and continue asking yourself this question throughout your life, as your tastes and opinions change, and the world changes around you.2. What skills am I most drawn and attracted to?We’ve heard a lot in recent times around many “in-demand” skills like carpentry and other skilled trades. What about skills like writing, communicating, marketing and a plethora of others? I implore you to determine what skills you have AND what skills you’re most drawn to.Once you have your list, put together your Venn-Diagram of the two lists to see which skills form the melding of what you have and what you love. It’s absolutely vital that you do this as early on in your career as possible, as it will help you get on the right track to launching the career, passion project or star t-up that you really want.Take an awesome tool like Gallup’s StrengthFinder and discover what things you’re good at, and while you’re doing it balance those strengths and skills against what you love to do most. Maybe you’ll have an epiphany. More than likely, you won’t have the information you desire overnight. But with some effort, application and deeper thought, you’ll keep moving toward that intersection of passion, talent and proficiency.3. Is this something that can sustain me in the future?“Passion helps us accelerate. We can work with the energy passion gives us and move ourselves into position while infusing our goals with vitality. It’s our commitment that sustains us over time so that we steadily build the skill and competency that will ultimately bring us success.” - Dr. Jennifer Howard , is this just a fleeting thought or daydream, or is this something that burns like fire inside of you that you can commit to? I start with this question around passion and enthusiasm as it’s imperative that you begin there. Please, please don’t start with money. Don’t start with, “there’s a market for this!” Don’t start with, “I’ve seen other people succeed at this.”Those are absolutely important observations. They are. But they’re not where you should start. When I talk about sustenance, I begin with launching a dream toward something that truly has deep, powerful meaning in your life. Something that you love, draws you in and gives you the goose bumps just thinking about it. This passion will carry you for a long period of your life, or maybe even for all of your life.It will invigorate you when you feel tired. It will vitalize you when you feel down, dejected or fearful of success and failure. When you build around your passion and make a mental and emotional commit to following through on what you’ve started, you begin to develop perseverance which is essential to helping you continue with your dream.4. What are all th e possibilities I see branching out from this direction? It’s not always how we start, but what we learn along the way and how things finish. I close with this question because it’s vitally important to think “long game” but ask these early questions up-front to bolster your creative imagination and thought process. Think about the possibilities that could come from the launch of your new business, job, idea, experiment or venture. Then, reflect back on those things, and as you add on continue to expand your mind to think of new possibilities. Start with a plan, too. Entrepreneurs looking to launch their dream should be especially encouraged by this from HBR:“We found that it pays to plan. Entrepreneurs who write formal plans are 16% more likely to achieve viability than the otherwise identical non-planning entrepreneurs.”Put together your plan. It will become so much easier to identify new opportunities and build powerful, synergistic relationships. Go ahead and get start ed. Do the work and move forward in growth to reap the results.Be willing to ask yourself the big questionsJoin my newsletter  for inspiring content and check out my bestselling book,  The Value of You.  This will give you inspiration to start planning for success on your journey. This article first appeared on Medium.
